I Am The Resurrection And The Life!
“I am the Resurrection and the Life. All who come to me shall not die but will live forever.”
It is a message of abiding hope. Like Jesus, we will rise again after going through our own Calvary and our Resurrection will be glorious. We have to believe that life for the disciples had changed dramatically during and after the events of the Passion. The one they had loved so much had been killed in a humiliating manner. In those days, they were frightened and alone, their Teacher, to all extents and purposes, dead and laid in temporary place. Imagine their shock when Jesus’ prediction came true and he was once again, if only for a moment, with them to finally reassure them that all that they’d hoped for was now a reality. “What will it take?” asked the prophet, “Even if one was to rise from the dead, would they then believe?”
Sitting in the Church of the Little Flower last night, one cannot help but feel that hope in our Church is very much alive and, to put it plainly, perhaps undergoing a type of Resurrection. A real community where people care for one another was in full evidence – if only the whole Church could emanate this. If we had an Easter prayer, maybe we could pray that the Church rises by accepting all people and developing an understanding of the needs of the marginalised more intensely. We pray that the Church rises by becoming a more gentle leader, less concerned with its own prestige and self-protection and more concerned with the cries of Catholics everywhere. We pray that the Church maintains a dialogue with society that is not based on fear but on a spirit of open listening. We pray so much that Christ’s Sacred Heart is everywhere loved. We pray for our renewal.
‘The Praises of God’, given to Brother Leo on Mount La Verna by St Francis.
You are holy, Lord God; you do wonderful things.
You are strong. You are great. You are the Most High.
You are the almighty King. You, holy Father,
King of heaven and earth.
You are three and one, the Lord God of gods;
you are good, all good, the highest good,
Lord God, living and true.
You are love, charity; you are wisdom, you are humility,
you are patience, you are beauty, you are meekness,
you are security, you are rest,
you are gladness and joy, you are our hope, you are justice,
you are moderation, you are all our riches to sufficiency.
You are beauty, you are meekness,
you are the protector, you are our custodian and defender,
you are strength, you are refreshment. You are our hope,
you are our faith, you are our charity,
you are all our sweetness, you are our eternal life:
great and wonderful Lord, Almighty God, Merciful Saviour.
